World Water Day

World Water Day is celebrated on 22nd March every year which aims to highlight the importance of freshwater and to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

Most recent statistics show that there are nearly 2 billion people who have to sustain life without access to safe water in the world. With a focus on groundwater, measuring the benefits, impact and changes to groundwater and its levels are of priority for 2022.

Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. Almost all of the liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. The most arid areas of the world depend entirely on groundwater. Accounting for approximately 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth, groundwater has the potential to provide societies with tremendous social, economic and environmental benefits and opportunities. Groundwater already provides half of the volume of water withdrawn for domestic use by the global population, including the drinking water for the vast majority of the rural population who do not get their water delivered to them via public or private supply systems, and around 25% of all water withdrawn for irrigation.
